He is survived by his wife, Cathy S Crandall, his first wife Mary A Crandall (Paul Clair), three children, Tracie A. Crandall (Kevin Gary), Matthew D. Crandall, and Steven Bland. His Grandchildren the late Brendan M. Gray (Alyssa Sylvester) Riley M. Bland and his Great grandchild Giana B. Gray and several cousins, nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, July 21, 2021, at Beall Funeral home located on Crain Highway at 11:00 am.
Besides spending time with his family and friends, Larry loved his status as a "grandpa", he often said "they make my heart smile". Larry had a passion for sports, pets, and all things American. His favorite baseball team was the one and only NY Yankees, that passion poured over to his daughter, Tracie and son, Matt and even his grandson, Brendan. His favorite ice hockey team was, you guessed it, the NY Islanders, but he also followed the Capitals and the NY Rangers. He like watching football but didn’t really have a favorite team. His love for animals got him the nickname "Doctor Doo-Lotta" (instead of Doctor Doo”little”). He always cared for his own pets, but had a huge, wonderful heart that he also fed the unfortunate cats in the neighborhood on a first come first serve basis, He would say, "They are all God's children". His motto was "There is always room for one more". Larry was a proud American, he flew the flag with pride and served as a Seaman Apprentice with the US Coast Guard from 1967-1969 and was honorably discharged. He was also a Chief Election Judge for many years with the Maryland State Board of Elections, alongside his daughter, Tracie. They both were proud to serve, and it made them closer. They both felt that hard work was a great reward. Larry was a lifetime member with the Disabled American Veterans at the Bowie MD location. He was a member of the American Legion, Greenbelt Post 136, (50 years). Larry was also a member of The National Order of Trench Rats; which was an organization for disabled World War 1 veterans as well as a member of the "Yellow Dogs". His favorite pastime was reading anything and everything he could get his hands on, he even had numerous newspaper and magazine subscriptions from all over sent to the house, he was truly up on the current affairs.
As Larry maneuvered through his extensive career with Giant (36 years), he was heavily involved with the Union. He spent 25 years as a Shop Steward and was on the Board of Trustees Teamster Local 730, the Joint Council, and the PrePaid Legal Aid (now known as LegalShield) all three for 18 years. He was a huge part of the Contract Committee and was an Honorary Retired Member of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters both for 36 years.
Cathy's last words to her beloved Larry were “God needs more good people like you”.
