Lawrence Henry Rinck

September 5, 1942 – January 4, 2025

Larry Rinck died peacefully on January 4, 2025, as a result of a stomach infection that impacted his vital organs. Born in Washington, D.C., he resided for 74 years in Prince George’s County, Maryland – all along Route 450 from Landover Hills to Bowie! His life was built around his love for his ever-growing family, his multitude of friends, and all sports, although golf was his overriding favorite from the age of 14 – very unusual at the time. Larry had natural athletic talent that started him at above average at all ages in all of his sports – baseball, basketball, football, bowling, skiing, fishing, golf, and others – and his ability only improved going forward. “Dr. Longball” was an excellent golfer, always happy to share his tips with others, especially his children, grandchildren and other youth. 

Larry was a funny guy and a fun guy; his dry, sarcastic wit and his amusing stories about himself and others were enjoyed by all. He also was a stand-up guy with high-caliber character traits – honest, reliable, trustworthy, compassionate, helpful, friendly, and more. Everybody liked Larry Rinck; his warmth and wit were compelling; he was a good person and a good citizen.

In 1963, Larry and his high-school sweetheart, Sandy Voorhees, were married and lived a full life. A few years later, he was drafted into the Marine Corps, where he served as an Infantryman in Vietnam for 13 months of his two-year active duty. Upon his return home, Larry joined the DC police force (MPDC) where he served in many capacities, finishing up for several years as an armed robbery detective. He loved every minute of his career on the police force. “Something new every day,” he’d say, and the word is that he was excellent at it.

During that time, Larry and Sandy were delighted to welcome into the world their three daughters – Kathleen, Stephanie, and Natalie. What joy! Following departure from the police force, Larry had an automotive hand-tool sales business and later became an insurance appraiser. Throughout his adulthood, he was a loving, supportive husband and then father to his daughters, of whom he was and is so proud. His two granddaughters, two grandsons, and three great-grandsons brought joy to his heart and a smile to his face. He continued to play sports and has treasured memories of golf outings, ski and beach vacations, playing Rummikub and other games, horse-track and casino visits, Redskins games, dancing, and many more activities – all with his wide range of family and friends of all ages.

Larry is survived by his loving and caring wife, Sandy, and daughters Kathleen Hoffman, Stephanie Rinck, and Natalie Derham; granddaughters Jordan and Morgan Hoffman; grandsons Casey and Drew Derham; great-grandsons Elliott, AJ, and Riley; his nephew Mike Rossiter (Linda); cousins Kenny Kaplan (Peggy) and Karen Schafer; Voorhees siblings Linda McLaughlin (Jerry, dec.), Brenda Jett, Janet Lombardo (Steve), Diana Merkel (Jimmy), Ricky Voorhees, and brother-in-law Ronnie Rubin (Glo, dec.); and all of their extended families. Larry was preceded to Heaven by his and Sandy’s parents; his sister Barbara Rossiter, her son Johnny and her daughter Lisa; Sandy’s sisters Joyce Voorhees Kelly and Glo/Gloria Rubin and brother‑in‑law Jerry McLaughlin; Kathleen’s life partner Casey Robinson; Larry’s “football wife” and Sandy’s “tall, soul sister” Jill Traynor; and a too-lengthy list of lifelong and other friends and family. 

Larry is in good hands with God and his family and friends in Heaven, but he will be missed here on Earth by his large and loving family and many wonderful friends. We will remember him and celebrate his life always, starting with the events below. We hope to see you!
