Levy (Lee) Nathaniel Mazyck was the son of Mercides Washington Mazyck and the late Levy Mazyck. He was born April 15, 1952 in Baltimore, Maryland. Levy departed this life to be with his Heavenly Father on May 24, 2020 after a lengthy battle with heart disease and complications of the coronavirus.
Levy was joined in holy matrimony on May 20, 1979 to his college sweetheart, Robin Esther Terry. From their marriage, two wonderful daughters, Dawn Michelle and Erika Terry, were born.
At an early age, Levy was baptized at Fountain Baptist Church in Baltimore, MD. Levy was a dutiful child and the eldest of his siblings. He encouraged his sister and brothers to think about their future careers and goals. From the very start, Levy always knew he wanted to grow up to be an accountant. Young Levy was also a neighborhood leader to do things like organize a baseball team and enroll his friends in a league.
At Forest Park High School, Levy was a member of the junior varsity/varsity lacrosse teams and the school’s wrestling team. Levy graduated from Forest Park in 1970. He continued his athletic endeavors as a member of the Morgan State College lacrosse team (the first U.S. African American college lacrosse team, as chronicled in the book, Ten Bears). Levy graduated from Morgan State College in 1974 with a degree in accounting to begin a career as an accountant and an auditor for civilian and military federal agencies in the DC metro area. He retired from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in 2007 with 30+ years of federal service.
Although Levy dated Robin for several years while in college, Levy “accidentally” bumped into Robin while she was a student at Western High School. On one occasion, Levy complained about the loud and crazy little girl who blocked his view of an important Poly football game. Levy watched band practices to see this new girl-trumpeter. Later, he (and his friends) crashed a house party where Robin just happened to live. So, when they were finally/properly introduced to each other by Levy’s best friend, Harold Ray, Lee and Robin became inseparable. They were perfect traveling partners as Robin did all of the driving and Levy navigated. Levy wrote poetry to Robin. Levy greatly enjoyed visiting the various states with Robin and the girls to learn about local history or to see special games. As the girls grew up, Levy continued his activities as a mentor, coach, and cheerleader for his family. He was so proud of Dawn’s participation with her baseball team. He cheered Erika at her track events, swim meets, and speech competitions. His guidance was instrumental in helping his girls achieve their academic and business successes. Dawn got accounting advice and support from her dad for her businesses. When Erika completed her studies for a master’s degree in management, Lee was so thrilled. Because he enjoyed music, Levy took toddler-Erika to a BB King concert where she fell in love with the music that later inspired adult-Erika to write and sing her own original R&B songs! Lee treasured Erika’s recordings and on-stage performances. He continued similar activities with his grandsons, nieces, and nephews by taking them on college tours and regularly scheduling advanced tutoring sessions. His commitment to take youngsters to the annual car shows in Baltimore and Washington still evokes fond memories for all. Levy found peace and joy on his vacations near the ocean. He was a voracious reader for current affairs, business, investments, and sports. He was an active member of several accounting and investment groups. Levy loved the MEAC basketball tournaments and attended almost every game throughout the years with his friends. Levy treasured his strong bond with his special group of Morgan alumni and sports team boosters who enjoyed each other at EVERY Morgan event/gathering. These guys talked, chatted, texted, and emailed on every sports subject 24/7! This cluster of close-knitted friends remembered to reserve Levy’s unofficial seat at all games, homecoming celebrations, and alumni meetings for many years. Lee could never resist steamed Maryland crabs with a cold beer!
As a faithful member of Antioch Baptist Church, Levy cherished every opportunity to sing in the men’s choir even though he was not the greatest singer. He loved supporting this ministry for his beloved Christian family!
