LORRAINE'S STORY
Lorraine Marcia Caverly Still was born on March 28, 1914 to Ethel and Francis Garnet Caverly in Framingham, Mass. After a few years in Northwood, N.H. she moved to Haverhill, Mass. where her mother was a teacher in the public schools. She married Carroll Wilder Still in 1937, moved to Bridgeport, Connecticut, and they started their family with Carol Ann and then Sally Marcia.
After moving back to Haverhill in1943 and going through a divorce, Lorraine opened a Kindergarten in her home which was very successful for 9 years (1945 - 1953) before joining the public school system.
Saturdays saw her taking the train into Boston for many years, first getting her bachelor’s degree from Boston University in 1953 and then her masters from Tufts University in special education majoring in learning disabilities; graduating a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma Honor Society in 1966.
Lorraine was in the Haverhill public school system for 23 years, first as a first - fourth grade teacher for many years and later conceptualizing and implementing the perceptual language disabilities program for the city schools. She became the department chairman of that program for grades K-12 with a staff of 22 teachers, tutors and aides. She was responsible for their supervision and training in addition to testing, diagnosing and planning remedial strategies for the students. In that capacity she worked with principals, classroom teachers and parents as well as state and national Associations for Children with Learning Disabilities.
Lorraine was a member of the First Baptist Church in Haverhill Massachusetts for over 40 years and for many of those years she was the director of the high school Sunday School program of over 100 students. She has been a member of Cornerstone Assembly for the last 24 years.
Retirement from the school system brought the opportunity for Lorraine to buy her Aunt Ruby's home in Lake Park Florida. Not content to sit and waste her retirement years, she tutored and worked in the church school of the First Baptist Church of Lake Park for 10 years. She loved her Florida home where she could work in her garden year round, enjoy her finches and cockatiels and take her grandchildren to the beach, Lion Country Safari, Key West and other wonderful places in Florida.
In the early 1990's she and a friend decided to move to Waxhaw, North Carolina, headquarters for the Wycliffe Bible Translators JAARS (Jungle aviators) program. During that time she served the Lord as head of housekeeping for missionary housing as they returned from the mission field and trained as jungle aviator pilots.
Over the years Lorraine was a prayer warrior for her family and friends. She used her Christmas cards, which were many, as a prayer list for the year. Her children and grandchildren knew to bring all things, good and bad, to her attention for prayer and each child had a particular day of the week when she would pray specifically for them. She loved reading her Bible with notations all over it and loved sharing her knowledge with others in conversation or leading a Bible study. And she loved singing and listening to the old hymns and asked us to sing the specific hymns we are singing today.
Lorraine's love and sense of humor, her impact on so many lives and her service to others will be missed but the imprint she has made on us and in our hearts will be carried by us into eternity. She leaves wonderful, loving memories for her daughters, Carol and Sally, to cherish in the years ahead as well as new memories made with her 6 grandchildren, Nancy, Tom, Cindy, Amy, Laura and David and all their spouses. Her love and influence have also been felt by her 13 great grandchildren and many, many friends. Her legacy will live on through our families.
How can we be sad when she is finally in the arms of her loving Savior, Jesus Christ?? Hallelujah!!!!!!
We love you Mom, Nana and Great Nana.
