Margaret Elizabeth Brooks, daughter of the late Joseph and Josephine Thomas was born on
April 9, 1935 in Collington, Maryland. She was called to eternal rest on January 14, 2022, with
her family by her side.
A lifelong residence of Prince George’s County, she was educated in the Princes George’s
County Public Schools System. Margaret was employed by the Prince George’s County School
System as a cook, where she enjoyed showing off her cooking skills. Several years later, she
retired, so that she could spend more time with her grandchildren.
Margaret was united in holy matrimony on July 28, 1956, to the love of her life, the late Samuel
E. Brooks Sr. of Bowie, Maryland. From this union, they were blessed with six children.
As a child, Margaret was raised as a devoted Catholic and loved being a parishioner of St. Pius
X in Bowie, MD. Even though she needed assistance with her canes, she enjoyed attending
Sunday Mass and chatting with fellow parishioners.
Affectionately known as Margaret, momma, mom, grandma, Newspaper and Phone, she loved
her family and family gatherings. Every holiday, she looked forward to cooking large meals,
which included everyone’s favorites. Also, she enjoyed playing cards or pokeno and spending
family time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Margaret spent a great
deal of the day on the phone talking to family and friends. She was always available to listen,
comfort and offer advice. Everyone knew that they could always call and talk to her about
anything and everything, even if sometimes you didn’t like what she had to say.
Margaret knew the birthdays of everybody, including their children, grandchild, great-grandchild,
nieces, nephews and even their children and would always call them to say “Happy Birthday”.
She was on the phone so much that as a baby, her great-grandson, Vincent started calling her
“Phone”. Margaret loved playing the lottery numbers, watching tennis, the Baltimore Ravens,
game shows, and Maury. She loved living “On the Hill”, spending many hours looking out of the
window watching the cars going up and down Collington Road, watching the trees, the wildlife
and mother nature.
Margaret was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Josephine Thomas, her husband
Samuel E. Brooks Sr., her daughter Rose M. Brewer, son Samuel E. Brooks Jr. “June Bug”,
brothers: Francis “Nathaniel”, Lawrence, Joseph “Bill”, James “Curley”, Clarence, and Nicholas
“Nick" Thomas, and sisters: Dorothy O’Brien and Theresa Thomas.
Margaret leaves to cherish her memory her daughters: Sandy Wells-Porter (Joe), and Jacki
Nichols (Ricky), sons: David and Phillip Brooks, Marcus Truehart, and son-in-law: John Brewer
Sr. Sisters: Rose Johnson (Thomas), Bernadette Stevenson, and Valerie Stevenson (Alvin).
Brother-in-law: Jerome Brooks and sisters-in-law: Mary Brooks, Geraldine Marshall, Joyce
Thomas, and Mildred Thomas.
To carry on her legacy Margaret leaves ten grandchildren: Karla Wells, Tara Wells, Shaunta’

Truehart, KeiAsia Coates, Megan Proctor, Patrick Proctor, James Brewer, Jordan Armstrong
and five great grandchildren: Vincent Lewis III, McKenzie West, Brandon Lewis, Jasmine Wood,
