Marianne Madalen Horeff

July 22, 1931 — October 25, 2021

Marianne Madalen (Kulik) Horeff of Crofton, MD passed away peacefully at home the evening of October, 25, 2021. She was 90.

Marianne was born on July 22, 1931 in Linden, NJ to Edward and Susan Kulik and was raised in Bayonne, NJ with her elder brother Vincent. She attended St. Henry’s Parochial School in Bayonne then received a full scholarship to the Benedictine Academy in Elizabeth, NJ where she graduated in 1948. Marianne went on to pursue a career in nursing and graduated from St. Francis Hospital School of Nursing, Trenton, NJ in 1951. She worked as a staff nurse at St. Vincent's Hospital in Staten Island, NY. Marianne earned a Bachelor’s of Science degree in nursing from Seton Hall University in South Orange, NJ in 1956. Top of her class, she graduated magna cum laude. While studying for a master’s degree at Columbia University, Marianne worked as a Nursing Arts Instructor at the Bayonne Hospital and Dispensary School of Nursing.

On May 23, 1959 Marianne married Thomas Gregory Horeff of Rutherford, NJ, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Horeff of Franklin, NJ, at St. Henry’s Church in Bayonne. Tom’s career as an aeronautical engineer with the FAA led the couple to move to Long Island, NY. Their first child, Susan, was born on Mother’s day the following May, 1960 followed by identical twins Nancy and Janice in 1962, then their son Tom on his sister Susan’s fourth birthday in 1964. During that time the young family moved from Long Island to Atlanta, GA.

In 1965, the family moved to Maryland. A resident of Crofton for 55 years, Marianne contributed her leadership, liaison and public relation skills serving as the first chairman of the Crofton League of Women Voters for two terms. She was also a member of the Citizens Advisory Committee for the local Board of Education and volunteered at the Crofton Convalescent Center. More community involvement included church programs - religious instruction, parish council, adult education, and lay ministry. Marianne was also a lector, eucharistic minister and committee member at St Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church in Crofton. She and Tom were active members of the family faith community Ocean of Glory.

Marianne returned to nursing in 1981 for a time before and after Tom's temporary assignment to the FAA’s regional office in Brussels, Belgium from 1984-1986. While in Brussels, they spent most of their free time exploring Belgium and the rest of Europe.

Marianne’s family and friends will remember her for her intelligence, great sense of humor, and endless love and sacrifice for Tom and her family. She is survived by her daughters Susan Horeff and Janice Badesha of Crofton, Nancy Pfund (Christopher) of Lutherville, son Tom Horeff (Kathy Callis) of Baltimore, daughter-in-law Sara Horeff of Arnold, and grandchildren Alexa, JJ, Layla and Hari.

A memorial mass and repast to remember and celebrate Marianne will be held at St Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish on Monday, November 8th, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to Arundel Volunteer Fire Department, 2380 Davidsonville Road, Gambrills, MD 21054 or Hospice of the Chesapeake, 90 Ritchie Hwy Pasadena, MD 21122.
