Marilea Ann Wynn Calderwood Flanagan, 79, of Bowie, Maryland, entered into eternal rest on Friday, May 24, 2024, in the ER at Anne Arundel Medical Center, Annapolis, Maryland. She died suddenly from a fatal pulmonary embolism.

Marilea was born on April 4, 1945, in Alhambra, California to Robert C. Wynn and Vesta Mae (Orton) Wynn. Marilea’s father was killed in action in the Philippines earlier in 1945 and never saw his new daughter. Her mother subsequently married Willard Calderwood and continued residing as a family in Alhambra, California.

Marilea graduated from Woodbury College, Burbank, California with a BS degree in Administration in 1967. Following graduation, she worked in the insurance industry, then enlisted in the U. S. Navy in March 1974. She attained the rank of Cryptologic Technician Administrative Petty Officer Third Class. She met her future husband during a square dance at the Pentagon—it was love at first sight. And on May 24, 1975, she married Navy Chief Petty Officer James Flanagan. Marilea loved to dance! She and Jim actively continued their square and round dancing in the Belair Square Cats Dance Club, and thoroughly enjoyed working with the club’s decorations committee.  They attended numerous local dance festivals and national dance conventions, until she passed so suddenly. They raised three wonderful children, daughter Melanie, and two sons, Brian, and Jason, both Navy veterans.

Marilea was a stay-at-home mom who took great pride in her responsibilities at home and in the community. She was active in school PTAs and in youth organizations such as Camp Fire, Cub Scouts, and Boy Scouts. She was a wonderful wife, mother, chef, domestic engineer, counselor, and loving friend to her family, grandchildren, and friends. Marilea loved to watch the birds and small animals in the back yard, and regularly followed various Live Eagle cameras. She loved to travel with her husband and family to see new things and create lasting memories.

Left behind to cherish her memories are husband of 49 years, James, daughter Melanie (Tom) Byrne, two sons, Brian (Jennifer) and Jason (Lesley), eight grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren, other relatives, and dear friends.
