On May 3, 2020, Martha Jayne Haynes Legg of Bowie, MD, wife of the late Phillip Waple Legg; mother of Pamela Jayne Culver (Legg) and Joanna Kiersten Legg; daughter of Richard James and Genevra E. Haynes, passed away peacefully in her home.  She fought a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease.

Martha attended Washington School for Secretaries and later worked at a law firm and in the flower shop at the local Giant, but her greatest accomplishment was raising her two girls after her husband passed away at a young age.  She dedicated her life to her girls.  She was a homemaker and then caregiver to her parents when she moved them from Washington, D.C. to her home in Bowie.  She was kind, big hearted and selfless.

She was once described as “eccentric,” and she was flattered by that.  Collector of baubles, ducks and frogs, upside-down Christmas trees, McBoo trees, Legg’s eggs trees.

She had a great respect for military service members.  She often wrote  letters to them, sent them care packages and even tied a yellow ribbon around the tree in her front yard.  She was raised to not be an “I, My, Me and Myselfer.”  She somehow had a knack for keeping a sense of humor amongst all the chaos.

Martha loved her home and enjoyed filling it with laughter and friends.  She always had an open door and an open heart.  She was the official Neighborhood Mom of Memory Lane.  Her home was always full of kids, cats, dogs, plants, birds, fish and fun.  She has loved and cared for all of God’s creatures along her way.  She had a green thumb that was inherited from her parents.  She was an expert at growing gardenias and had an innate ability to nurse sick frogs, baby birds, squirrels, chipmunks and plants back to health.

In her own words, “It is not to be a sad time, for I will have lived one day at a time and enjoyed the love of my friends and family.”  Everyone that knew her is asked to celebrate Martha’s life in their own way.  A private service is to be held.  Internment will be at Fort Lincoln Cemetery.  It was Martha’s wish that any contributions be sent to Children’s Hospital in Washington, D.C.  A celebration of life event for Martha will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you please make a donation to Children's National Hospital in honor of Martha Legg.
