Mary G. Angelopoulos

September 18, 1945 — February 17, 2020

Mary G. Angelopoulos was born on September 18, 1945 in Tripolis, Arcadias- Greece to George and Stavroula Fatouros, both of whom preceded her in death. Her toddler sister, Mary Fatouros, and her beloved husband, George K. Angelopoulos also preceded her in death. Mary graduated high school (Lykion) in Tripoli, Greece. She graduated top of her class and had the following opportunities awaiting her. A secured position in the Department of Forestry, a scholarship to France as she was very fluent in the language or a modeling opportunity, as she had a Hollywood star's figure. But Mary chose none of those. She fell in love with her high school sweetheart, the only man she knew and the love of her life, George K. Angelopoulos. They married in their hometown of Tripolis, Greece on October 18, 1964.

Mary was a loving, devoted and supportive wife, mother and sister. Her family was her world and she loved being a homemaker and cook. Every Saturday, George would take her to Evan's beauty salon located in the Irene apartments in Chevy Chase, MD, where she would get her hair and nails done.

Every summer, for decades, her husband George, would send off Mary and the children for 2 1/2 to 3 months to Greece to spend time with both grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, relatives and countless friends. George would meet them the early part of August for a couple weeks and plan a big feast at Mary's childhood home on the 15th of the month on her Name day.

Sundays were all about church and family. As much as possible, she attended most services even despite many years of chronic pain. Worshipping her Savior was her joy and spiritual medicine. She was a long time member of Riverdale Baptist Church in Upper Marlboro, MD under the leadership at the time of the Rev. Herbert Fitzpatrick and his wife, Lois. All four of her children graduated with honors from Riverdale Baptist School. She also was a long time member of St. Theodore's Greek Orthodox church in Lanham, MD under the leadership last of Father Kostaris but especially in the latter years when her chronic pain had worsened.

Her favorite Bible verses were John 3:16, Philippians 4:13 and 2 Timothy 1:7 which her daughter recited to her the night before she passed as she said goodnight to her: "For God has not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love and of a sound mind."

Mary had a servant's heart in all sense of the word. Although she never held an outside paying job, whatever she had saved financially, she gave without hesitation to help others, not only individuals but dozens of charities and Christian memories. Nearest to her heart was to find a cure for Alzheimer's, of which her father passed away from and to find a cure for cancer of which her husband died from. In saying, the Alzheimer's Foundation of America and the American Cancer Society would be the two organizations that she gave to on a monthly basis (among others). Mary had compassion for the orphan child. She wanted to share Christmas and Easter with children from church who had become orphans at an early age. She reared her own children to be selfless individuals and each of those holidays she would prioritize to shower the orphan with Christmas presents and treats and a huge Easter basket on Resurrection Sunday. Then, her own kids who accompanied her on those visits, would in turn be given their gifts of the season.

Left to cherish her memories, are her children: Demetra Angelopoulos Brytvych & son in law, Volodymyr Brtyvych son, Costas Angelopoulos; son, George Angelopoulos; daughter, Stavroula Angelopoulos, her brother in Greece Theodoros Fatouros & his wife, Fotini Fatourou, along with their 3 children who were Mary's pride and joy as her own: Stavroula Fatourou, George Fatouros, Theodore Fatouros. Also survived by her brother in Greece, Evangelos Fatouros, and many other nieces and nephews, great nieces and great nephews. She was also blessed with a step grandson, Denys Brytvych and his wife, Marina Brytvych and her first step great grandson of 2 yrs. of age, Zachariah Brytvych of whom live in Zhitomir, Ukraine. Lastly, but not least, a host of many family and friends.

In the spirit of Mary's charitable nature, donations to the Alzheimer's Foundation of America, 322 Eighth Avenue, 16th Floor
