Mary Lou Billings

May 4, 1935 — January 13, 2019

Mary Lou Billings, 83, passed away on January 13, 2019 at her home in Bowie, Maryland after a long battle with cancer.

Born Mary Lou Cowley in Putnam County, West Virginia, she was the first daughter of Stanford and Mary Cowley. After graduating from Sherman High School in 1953 she worked to put herself through college. She graduated from the West Virginia Institute of Technology in 1956 with a degree in Accounting.

Mary Lou married Jack Billings in 1956. She moved to Bowie, Maryland where Jack had obtained a teaching job. Their first child, Anna Lisa Billings Streckfuss was born in 1956.  Her first son, Jeffrey Brian Billings was born in 1961, followed by her second son, Quentin Scott Billings in 1963.  Jack passed away in 1984.

Mary Lou’s first jobs were in accounting. She worked for Carday Associates as an Accountant while raising her children.  She took great pride in her volunteer work with the Girl Scouts.  She was a very active member and volunteer at her church, St Matthews United Methodist Church in Bowie. Favorite vacations included summers camping in a pop up tent camper on Assateague Island, Maryland and autumns at Shenandoah National Park. She loved to spend time tending her garden and worked the Washington Post crossword puzzle daily. She doted on her grandchildren, attending all of their birthday celebrations, sporting events, school events and graduations.  She was thrilled to welcome her great granddaughter in 2016.

Mary Lou is survived by her three children, Lisa, Jeff and Scott, son-in-law Bob, daughters-in-law, Lisa and Debbie, grandchildren Jackie, Kate, Eric, Kate, David, Jimmy, Emily, Ryan, great granddaughter Mollie and Gary, Mary Lou’s fiancé.
