Mary Elizabeth Johnson was born to the late Wade and Ruth I. Nickson on December 25, 1938 in Bowie, MD. She was the oldest of 4 children. She was called to rest on Thursday, August 10, 2023.
Mary was a lifelong member of Ascension Catholic Church in Bowie, MD. She graduated from Fairmount Heights High school. Mary had a distinguished career with the Federal Government where she worked for 30 + years with the Department of Defense: U.S. Navy, Joint Chiefs of Staff.
Mary loved spending holidays with her family and taking trips to the casinos with the Bowie Senior Citizen Community, she also appreciated a good game of bingo, spending many a Saturday or Sunday afternoons at the Delta Bingo with her sister & daughter-in-law. You could also find Mary spending precious moments with her beloved husband of 53 years, Herbert, sitting on their front porch talking, laughing and waving to all those passing by. Mary enjoyed watching CNN & MSNBC to keep up with the current political events of the day.
In-addition she also enjoyed watching The View, Judge Judy, and Gun Smoke. She also loved a good cross word puzzle and seek and find puzzle books.
Mary was pre-deceased by her father Wade Nickson, mother Ruth I Nickson, Aunt Mabel DeLoach, sister’s Ruth Ann Ferebee and Margaritte Theresa Williams, daughter Alethea E. Patten, and grandson Jason Patten. To cherish her memories, she leaves her husband Herbert Johnson, son’s Adrain Patten (Carlette), Sterling F. Patten, Jeffrey Patten, Sr. (Veronica), Scott Johnson (Tracey), daughter April Patten, sister Catherine Sharps, sister-in-law Barbara A. Johnson; 12 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, 7 nieces, 8 nephews , and a host of cousins, other relatives and friends.
Mary was a loving, caring and compassionate person. She was a wonderful conversationalist with everyone especially her children, grandchildren, and nieces & nephews and she will truly be missed by all.
