Michael Aaron Fitzurka, 88, died Monday, April 12, 2021, in Annapolis, MD.
Born on October 6, 1932 in Pittsburgh, PA, he was the son of the late Michael Fitzurka and Mary Margaret Olexsa.

Mr. Fitzurka served with distinction in the U.S. Army during the Korean War learning and teaching the maintenance of helicopters.  In high school, he thrived in sports; running in track and playing on the City Champion Anacostia High School Football team. He became a machinist apprentice at the Washington Navy Yard.  He worked at the San Diego Naval Station repairing ships, the Naval Ordnance Lab as a model maker, and the National Institute of Health making medical instruments (most memorably sunglasses for drunk pigeons). He retired from the Government Printing Office in 1987.  He loved fishing, scuba diving, crabbing and golf. In retirement, he worked part time as a ranger and driving range manager at Enterprise Golf Course in Mitchellville, MD. He spent many years gardening, ballroom dancing  and playing canasta with his friends. In this last COVID year, he made over 1100 face masks and donated them to numerous hospitals, churches and Native American reservations around the country. Michael was a loving brother, husband and father.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara (Shinnick) Fitzurka; two sons and one daughter, Mark Fitzurka and his wife, Michelle (Prefontaine), Michelle (Fitzurka) Quigley and her husband, Mark Quigley and Michael Fitzurka and his wife, Geraldine (Nygaard); two brothers, Martin Fitzurka and his wife Mary (England), and Malcom Fitzurka; 8 grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and a host of friends. He was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Jane Colbert.

A Mass of Christian burial will be offered at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, April 27, at St Edwards Catholic Church in Bowie, MD, where friends may call one hour prior to the service.  In lieu of flowers the family has requested donations be made to the Alzheimer's Association.

Internment will be held in private at Cheltenham Cemetery in Prince Georges County, MD
