Born in Salt Lake City, Utah on February 9, 1940, he was the oldest of six children. As part of a military family, Ray went to school in several states including Connecticut, Alaska, Georgia, and Monterey, California. After graduating from East Haven High School in Connecticut, Ray joined the Air Force at age 18 and served at Evreux-Fauville Air Base in France. A few years later he returned to the US and began his career at the Space Sciences Shop at the University of Maryland, where he completed his Bachelor of Science degree. He met the love of his life, Marion Laga, who was a registered nurse getting her graduate degree at the University of Maryland.
