Nancy Norton Prinkey

July 27, 1936 — January 7, 2025

White Plains

Nancy Norton Prinkey died peacefully at her residence in the presence of her two children on January 7, 2025. She was 88 years old. Her husband of 57 years, Kenneth Melbern Prinkey, predeceased her in 2011. Her survivors include her daughter, Linda Briggs (Rusty), her son, Kenneth Mark Prinkey (Judy), three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Nancy was a lifelong caregiver, both for members of her own family and for members of the community. After caring for her two children, she aided her parents as they aged; she also helped care for her sister-in-law, and then cared for her husband for many years. Nancy married at the age of 18 and so did not pursue higher education until her own children were in high school. She received her undergraduate degree and then went on to earn a master’s degree in counseling from Bowie State. She pursued a profession in counseling for many years helping juvenile delinquents and victims of domestic violence.

Nancy was born and raised in Suitland, Maryland and spent most of her life in the state, with the exception of about a dozen years after her retirement when she and her husband lived in Port Charlotte, Florida. After his death, she remained in Florida for several years but later purchased a home in La Plata, Maryland, and then for several years divided her time between the two states.

Nancy and Ken lived in Temple Hills, Maryland for many years while he established and ran A.E. Prinkey and Son Moving and Storage Co. in Oxon Hill. They spent many happy long weekends pursuing their love of boating up and down the Chesapeake Bay’s many tributaries. Indeed, it was a given that you would find Nancy every Friday evening during boating season (April to November) packing up the gear they’d need for the weekend. Their home marina for many years was near Solomons Island, and Nancy was the happy hostess for countless gatherings on the Cloud Nine and later on Our Condo for friends and family, including all the family birthdays and celebrations that fell during boating season. Later, the couple spent many happy weeks RVing around the country with many new-found friends. Anyone who knew Nancy Prinkey thought of her as a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and friend, and a person who was always dedicated to the care of others. Only in her final months of life did she acquiesce to receiving, rather than giving, the care. Even then she would try to help anyone who seemed to need it.
