Nicholas Michael Lomangino, MD, ABFE

February 9, 1950 – January 27, 2025

Nicholas Lomangino, a dedicated public servant, physician, veteran, and lifelong learner, passed away on January 27, 2025, at the age of 74. He leaves behind a legacy of service, knowledge, and unwavering commitment to his family, country, and community.

His passion for technology began early, earning an amateur radio license in high school and later obtaining an FCC Extra Class license. He was among the first graduating class in Computer Science at St. John’s University in New York in 1972, launching a 5-year career as an IT developer, manager, and consultant before transitioning into medicine.

As a board-certified physician in internal medicine and forensic medicine, he earned his MD from Universitas Libera Urbis Juarez Collegium Scientiarum Biomedicalium: Schola Medicinae in 1983. He further specialized in occupational and environmental medicine, earning a certificate from the American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine in 1994. In 1997, he was invited to join the American College of Forensic Examiners and held the title of Diplomate of the ABFE.

He was employed at the FAA/DOT since 2015, moving up the ranks from the position of regional flight surgeon for the eastern region, and ending his career as the Senior Advisor to the Deputy Federal Air Surgeon.

Nicholas also attended Concord Law School passing the 1st year boards. He stated that knowledge and understanding of the law would allow him to do his job more effectively.

A proud U.S. Air Force veteran, he attended the USAF School of Aerospace Medicine and served in-theatre as a flight surgeon during Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm in Gulf War I.

Beyond Nicholas’ professional achievements, he was a man who deeply valued learning, mentorship, and the arts, serving his community in various voluntary organizations. He was a member and volunteer at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., where he led tours most Sundays. He was a Division Commander of Division 25 of the Potomac Guardians in the Coast Guard Auxiliary, an organization he joined in 2014. Holding the Operations Specialist (AUXOP) rating, he was also a watch-stander at Coast Guard Station Washington. A strong advocate for youth development, he was deeply involved in the Sea Scouts program, a joint initiative between the Boy Scouts of America and the Coast Guard Auxiliary. His passion for the program was so great that he named his beloved dog C.G. Scout, or "Scout" for short. Furthermore, he used the FCC amateur radio license and was a regional emergency advisory member for a portion of the East Coast.

Nicholas is survived by his loving wife Antonietta Lomangino, his three children Kristie Lomangino, Michael Lomangino, Thomas Lomangino, daughter-in-law, Lindsay Lomangino, and his cherished grandson Alexander Lomangino, who was the light of his life. His dedication to service, education, and his family will remain an enduring inspiration to all who knew him.
