Diane McMullen was born on March 4, 1955, to Sarah and John Burgett, at Bolling AFB where her father was stationed at the time. She joined siblings Mary Ann, Sharon, and Scott, with Debbie to follow. The Burgett family eventually settled down in Bowie, MD, while Diane was still a child, and her education saw her through Saint Pius X Elementary and Elizabeth Ann Seton High School. While still in grade school, Diane met the love of her life, Terry McMullen, and the two were married in 1975 shortly after graduating high school. Diane joined Terry in Italy for a time while he continued his medical education, and the couple soon found themselves back in Bowie, where they raised three boys, Danny, J.P., and Matthew, as well as a menagerie of beloved pets, including Brandy, Cammie, Bosco, and Stella.
Above all, Diane was a caregiver – she was a volunteer firefighter before becoming a housewife after marriage and loved to tend her gardens (both figurative and literal) every moment of every day. After Terry was diagnosed with MS, her purpose in life was making sure he was comfortable and devoted any moment not caring for him to assisting her family, friends, neighbors, and pets with any task, no matter how big or small. The greatest joy in her life in recent years was being with her first grandson, Benji, thanks to J.P. and his wife Becky.
After a short battle with cancer, Diane passed away peacefully in her sleep on Christmas Eve, 2021. She joins her husband Terry, father John and mother Sarah, nephew Robert, father-in-law John and mother-in-law Patricia, brothers-in-law Louis and Frank, and sister-in-law Tracy in God’s loving embrace. She is survived by her sons and daughter-in-law, grandson, sisters and brother, her extended McMullen family, and beloved dog, Stella.
