Patricia “Pat” Rainey , age 73, died on Thursday January 21, 2021, in Gambrills, Maryland.

Pat is survived by her son, Steven Rainey, of White Marsh; her son, Dennis Rainey, of Severn; her daughter, Dawn Thomas, of Crofton; her brother, Larry Hayes, of Beltsville; and her aunt Annette Hayes, of Northfield, New Jersey. She is preceded in death by her sister, Judy Hayes, her mother and father, Mary Margaret “Peggy” and William “Bill” Hayes Sr., of Berwyn Heights; and her brother, William “Bill” Hayes Jr., of Laurel.

Pat was a strong, loving, and generous single mother who worked hard to provide for her family, sometimes holding down as many as three jobs at once while raising her three children.  With an unflinching work ethic, she rose through the ranks from receptionist to vice president in the non-profit direct mail industry.  Pat excelled at her work and loved what she did.  Her efforts helped raise funds for campaigns such as the building of the Vietnam War Memorial in DC, Blinded Veterans of America, POW-MIA, and more. Many of the close relationships she formed during her career continued on after retirement and through today.  Her hard work not only provided much needed funds for some very good causes; it also afforded her the ability to provide generously for her family as well, helping in every way she could with contributions toward college educations, cars, weddings and much more.  

In her free time, Pat loved being with family.  She was always up for exploring vintage and thrift shops, furniture refinishing, and all sorts of DIY projects too numerous to list.  In addition to enjoying all these things with her children and their families, she also loved being a grandma. She took great pleasure in the growth and accomplishments of her eldest granddaughter through college and into young adulthood, enjoyed watching her step granddaughters grow and thrive, and took an active role in helping her oldest son raise her youngest granddaughter. Her presence in our lives will be greatly missed.
