Philip Ira Hazen born September 9, 1936 died December 6, 2018 due to complications of Parkinson’s and pneumonia. He is survived by two sons Jonathan and Jeffrey, their wives Angie and Laura, grandchildren Adrianna, Isabelle, Alexander, and Analiese; and his siblings Glenn, Samuel, and Eileen (Watkins) Zimmerman.
Philip graduated from Penn State in 1958 with a B.S. in Civil Engineering, and then served with the US Navy Civil Engineering Corp Seabee battalion as company commander on Okinawa and Guam. In 1961 he began work as a Transportation Engineer with the U.S. Department of Transportation and continued his work there until his retirement in 1994.
Philip married Ruth Ellis on July 4, 1971 in Berlin, New York, and they were together until she passed on April 21, 2018. Philip enjoyed several activities including beekeeping, skiing, running, camping, traveling, and building restoration.
In 1971 he obtained his M.S. in Civil Engineering from Northwestern University and registered as a professional engineer. With these skills he bought several properties, and restored or developed them for various usages. In the fall of 1983 he purchased and renovated a historic farm house in Tracy’s Landing, MD where they lived until 2015.
Friends are invited to celebrate Philip's life on Monday, December 10, 2018 from 6pm to 8pm at the Beall Funeral Home, 6512 NW Crain Hwy (Rt 3 South), Bowie, MD, where a memorial service will be held on Tuesday, December 11, 2018 at 11am.
