OBITUARY OF RACHEL SCOTT
“God saw the road was getting rough, the hill hard to climb.
So, He gently closed those loving eyes and whispered, ‘Peace by thine’.”
Rachel (White) Scott was born on February 1, 1942, in Saint Indigoes, Maryland. She was born to the late William W. White and Mary Elizabeth Gough. She departed this life and took flight to her Heavenly Home on Tuesday, January 18, 2022.
Rachel grew up in Saint Mary’s County. At the age of 6, she moved to Washington, District of Columbia to live with her oldest sister, Lucy (White) Scott. She attended DC Public Schools. At age 12, she went to live with her oldest niece, Dorothy Gary until she married (the late) Hayes Scott, Jr. on March 6, 1960, relocating to Kansas City, Kansas. In 1972, she relocated back to Washington, DC where she raised her five (5) children. In March 2017, she moved with her daughter, Mary (Scott) Houser and her Son-in-Love, Willie Houser, where she built fond and lasting memories with her family – including her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
“Ray-Ray” – as she was affectionally known by her family and friends – was known for her stern demeanor, and her beautiful, wonderful soul. She was a true gardener who was a life member of the National Home Gardening Club. She thoroughly enjoyed spending countless hours in her backyard planting a variety of flowers, vegetables, and other plants. Rachel was a loving mother, devoted grandmother, and caring great-grandmother (lovingly called “Nana”). Family was extremely important to her and made sure to spend time with each of her children and grandchildren. She enjoyed running weekly Saturday morning errands with her oldest daughter, Bridget. She also spent quality time with her son, Hayes III (June), sticking with him through his hospitalizations, never leaving his side. She absolutely adored her fur babies – DJ, Lucy, Bella, Buddy, and Macy – amongst other pets for which she cared deeply over the years. In June 2005, she joined the Key to Heaven Kingdom Ministries.
Rachel was preceded in death by one daughter, Cynthia Denise (Scott) Jones; one son, Cuthbert Thaddeus Phillips, Jr.; four brothers: Albert Smith, Dolly Smith, Charley and William White, Jr.; and ten sisters: Rachel “Roxy” White, Perline White, Stella White, Lucy White, Lillian White, Shirley Roots, Mary Lavage White, Josephine White, Sara Thomas, and Julia Joyner.
She leaves to cherish two daughters: Bridget Scott and Mary Houser (Willie); one son Hayes Scott, III; five grandchildren: Willie Harvey, Chandra McNeill, Cristal Houser, Chantel Houser, and Timothy Houser; three great-grandchildren: Osyrus McNeill, Nevaeh McNeill, and Jaxon Muse; one sister Lucy Barber, one brother Oden Smith, nieces/nephews: Pastor Mary Smith, Pastor Marjorie Smith, Michele Bailey (Preston), Pastor Albert Smith, Jr. (Kim), Muriel Isaac (John), Malinda Turner-Hardie (Bobby), Laura Bullock (Michael), Charles Harris (Wanda), Lillian Roots (Shaun, Lemuel and Tia), Juanita Perry (Kem, Bud, and the late Tony and Rodney), Beverly Ann Perry, John Perry, Jerome Perry, Florence Beckwith, Carolin Webb, Pamela Green, Michael Costley,
