Dr. Ramzy Labib passed away peacefully on January 26, 2024, at UMMC in Baltimore, MD. He was born on July 5, 1939 in Cairo, Egypt to Selim & Elaine. It was there where he met Afaf and married her in 1965, and later resided in Columbia, MD and Clearwater, FL.
Ramzy began medical school at age 15 at Ein Shams University in Cairo, Egypt and received his MD by age 20. He continued there as an Assistant Professor and then Professor and earned his PhD in Biochemistry in 1968. In 1974 he received a grant to work in Immunology research at the Mayo Clinic (1974-1976, 1978) and then became a Research Assistant Professor in Dermatology at the University of Michigan Medical School (1980-1982). In 1982 he went to work at Johns Hopkins University, School of Medicine, as a Resident, Assistant and Associate Professor of Dermatology, where he researched and published many papers in his field. In 1991, he began work at the FDA as a Medical Officer in the Center for Drug Research & Evaluation in Dermatology until his retirement in 2001.
Dr. Ramzy loved studying science, engineering, astronomy and the Bible. Religion and Science were his two greatest passions. From early on in his life, his mission was to study the word of God and the teachings of the early Fathers of Christianity and the Coptic Orthodox Church, and spread the word through teaching and Bible Studies. He established Saint Mark’s Orthodox Fellowship and was committed to it since his retirement until the very end, in order to spread the word of God through Bible Study. He lived a full life as a true servant of our Lord.
He is survived by his wife, Afaf; two children, Sameh and Mary, and their spouses Mary Ann Labib and Ihab Abdou; grandchildren Nicole and John Abdou, and Zachary and Matthew Labib; nephews Hany Selim Labib, and Nancy and Bassem Ramy Selim; cousins Randa Kamel and Magdy Gabrawy.
Family, friends, and others are invited to the Funeral at St. Mary Coptic Orthodox Church, 14196 Frederick Rd. Cooksville, MD 21723, from 11:00 am on February 2, 2024 to honor the life of Dr. Ramzy Selim Labib.
