Robert Harvey “Bob” Tichenor was born 100 years ago in Westfield NJ to LeRoy and Edith Tichenor. He and sister Helen grew up in Westfield, both graduating Westfield High. He always loved sports, but unable to play, Bob was an enthusiastic cheerleader both at Westfield High and Colgate University (Colgate was all men at the time). After gradation from Colgate in 1943, and ineligible for military service, he went on to work for Exxon (then the Jersey Standard Oil Co., known by the name “Esso” seen on gasoline stations and products). Starting at company headquarters 30 Rockefeller Plaza in Manhattan, he remained at the company in support and coordination roles in the accounting/payroll and data processing departments until retirement in 1982.
He met Helen Ralston in New York, where she also worked at Standard Oil,. They married July 3, 1948 and moved to Caldwell NJ where they raised their two children Bob, Jr and Gale. Later he moved to Houston TX where he retired and moved to Bethlehem, PA with his second wife, Ruth. Bob was often found puttering around the yard maintaining beautiful landscaping wherever he lived. After his second wife's passing,, Bob eventually joined his son in Bowie Maryland where he was delighted to spend time with Bob Jr.'s children and grandchildren many of whom lived in the area. Always having family in his priorities, Bob Sr. was privileged to witness the birth of 7 more great grandchildren during this stay (5 locally), 15 total. He saw the inauguration of the next generation with the birth of his great-great granddaughter in early 2021, six weeks before the milestone of his 100th birthday on March 12!
Bob departed this world December 24, 2021, succumbing to a short debilitation disease. He is survived by his two children, seven grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren and a great-great granddaughter.
