On Sunday, March 24, 2019, Rosario “Charo” Iglesias, our beloved Mami, Abuela, and Bisabuela, passed away at the age of 87.
The youngest of eight children, Charo was born on February 26, 1933 in Havana, Cuba. In 1956 she married her husband, Daniel Humberto Iglesias and they made their way together to Washington DC, with the hope of building their very own American dream. She worked first at Rogers Heights Elementary School in the cafeteria, as the ice cream lady. Later she built a career at Riggs National Bank until her retirement in 1995. In 1995 she officially became a proud citizen of the USA. She and Humberto together raised their two daughters, Annette and Ileana.
Mami had a talent for cooking exceptional food and keeping her people fed. She had an incredible green thumb and loved gardening, with special care for her roses. She came to know and love the Lord, and in her more able-bodied days, enjoyed serving often in the kitchen at First Baptist Church of Laurel. It brought her a special joy to sit at the edge of the surf with her grand babies on family beach trips. In her later years, she became an avid solver of jigsaw puzzles, she kept a disciplined schedule for watching her telenovelas, and she never met a game of Yahtzee she could turn down.
She is preceded in death by her husband Daniel Humberto Iglesias, her parents Leonardo Herrera and Martina Martinez Herrera, and her seven siblings Rafaela, Maria, Hilda, Soila, Lilia, Geraldo, and Julio. She is survived by her daughters Annette (Gary) Grove and Ileana (John) Cooper; six grandchildren Christine (Stephen) Caldwell, Daniel (Elizabeth) Grove, Phillip (Sara) Grove, Garrett (Katherine) Grove, Alina Cooper, and Juliana Cooper; and six great-grandchildren Lyla, Alani, Willa, and Alessia Grove, and Charles and Emmett Grove.
A viewing will be held on Sunday, March 31, 2019 from 2pm to 4pm at Faith Community Church at 1306 Riedel Road, Gambrills, MD 21054 followed by a memorial service at 4 PM. Refreshments to be served directly following the service. Flowers are welcome and may be delivered to Beall Funeral Home (6512 Crain Hwy, Bowie, MD 20715) or the church on Sunday. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.
A private interment for family will be held at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Silver Spring, MD.
