Ruberl Carr was born in Tylertown, Mississippi on June 1, 1936. He was the first-born child of parents, father Percy and mother Martha Carr. He graduated from Hope Vocational High School, Jaycess, MS in 1956. After high school graduation he moved to Chicago, Illinois where he was employed by the National Superior Fur Company until drafted into the United States Army. His career in residential real estate brokerage spans 36 years with licensure in the states of North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Illinois.
Through mutual acquaintances while enrolled in business classes at Cortez W. Peters Business College, Chicago, Illinois, he met Miss Carrie D. Turner via telephone on the third Saturday of October 1958. They were married on August 6, 1960 in a military wedding ceremony at the base chapel at Aberdeen Proving Grounds, Maryland, the military base where he was stationed. To this union a son and daughter were born.
He was drafted into the U.S. Army in January 1959 and served a two-year tour of duty. After an honorable discharge in January 1961, he had a mandate to join the U.S. Army Reserves. His reserve unit was activated October 1, 1961 and deployed to Ft. McLellan, Alabama. During this unit activation and deployment, he decided to go Regular Army (RA). As a career soldier, he rose up through the ranks, promoted to, held and retired at the rank of Sergeant Major (SGM), the highest enlisted rank. His overseas duty assignments included Korea, Ethiopia, Vietnam and Germany. Among his awards and decorations are the Armed Forces Expedition Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Bonze Star, National Defense Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Good Conduct with 8 Oak Leaf Clusters, Overseas Service Ribbon, Army Service Ribbon, and Joint Forces Commendation. He was a 43-year member of The American Legion.
He leaves to cherish memories his wife of 58 years, Carrie, of Hanover Park, Illinois; son David E. Carr and daughter, Aretha L. Carr; granddaughter Anna E. Carr; sister Lula Lee Shields; sister Mary Ruth Fortenberry; sister Sandra Carr-Bensen. Preceding him in death are his father Percy Sr, mother Martha, and brothers Charlie Sr and Percy Jr., and sister Hattie Lee Gutter.
Brother Carr accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior and was baptized in 1953. Upon moving to Chicago, he regularly attended Wayman African Methodist Episcopal Church and joined Greater Bethesda Missionary Church. In 1995 He and his wife relocated from Pennsylvania back to Illinois and settled in Hanover Park. He joined Second Baptist Church of Wheaton, Illinois where he was ordained to serve in the office of deacon in 2003. Later he joined Second Baptist Church of Elgin, Illinois where he served on the Veterans Ministry and ordained to serve in the office of deacon in 2006. He served in this role until his death.
