Russell was born June 4, 1935 in Whitehall, Montana and grew up in Pony, Montana.  He was raised by his maternal grandmother.  He graduated from Harrison High School in 1953 and enlisted into the United States Army in 1955.   On November 2, 1957 he married the former Joellen Schweitzer in Washington, D.C.  While serving in the Army, he was a helicopter mechanic and served overseas in Korea, Panama, and Vietnam.  After his discharge from the Army in 1964, he settled in the Washington D.C. suburbs.  He went on to be a construction equipment mechanic and starting in 1983 shop foreman for Potomac Industrial Trucks where he retired in 2004.  After an extremely brief retirement, he went to work for Glenn Dale Golf Course maintaining their equipment for several years.  He retired again, this time for good in 2014.

Russ loved playing golf, he especially liked to play with his sons, nephews, and brother-in-law.  He enjoyed traveling the United States with his family and friends, making several trips out west and to Alaska.  He loved the Washington Redskins, a season ticket holder for 30+ years and attended two Super Bowls.  In later years he became a Nationals fan and attended many games with his family. He enjoyed working with his hands and above all, loved spending time with all nine of his grandchildren and one great grandson.  Russ raised three sons and while they sometimes tested him, his greatest joy was their successes and the births of all his grandchildren and great grandson.

He is survived by his wife Joellen, three sons; John (Mary Beth) of Stevensville, MD, Jason (Bridgitte) of Stevensville, MD, Joseph (Jenny) of Abingdon, MD, nine grandchildren and great grandson, and numerous nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his brother Bill, and sister Eva.
