He as born in Leon, Maryland. The eldest of four children of a
farming family. In his youth he was pulled from school after
completing the sixth grade to help his father work their farm
and to work as a stable lad to help earn money for the family.
In February of 1951, he secured a job as a Heavy Equipment
Operator with the Prince George's County Department of Public
Works, from where he retired in July of 1991 .
On September 18, 1951 he married his sweetheart, Nancy at a
Justice of the Peace office. They were happily married until
her death on September 10, 2001.
He was a man of simple means and simple tastes. He knew what
he knew, he did what he had to do when he had to do it, and
that was it. He looked forward to being with his wife, their
daughter Amy Marie, whom they adopted at birth, having the
paperwork already being processed; their son David Leonard,
a joyous late-in-life gift, his son-in-law Frank Scalzo and
especially his only grandchild James Michael. He enjoyed family
get-togethers and just being with family.
