Russell Dewey Powell passed away peacefully on January 7, 2019 at the age of 90. He was born on February 15, 1928 in Blackstone, Virginia to the late Thomas L. Powell and Pearl Bridgeman. Russ was one of six siblings. He was drafted into the army and stationed in Aberdeen, MD. During his time there, he was assigned to work in electronics. After his was honorable discharge from the army, he went to work at G.E. until his retirement.
After his marriage to Johann Miller on December 7, 1952, they settled in Seabrook, MD. They were blessed with 66 wonderful years of marriage. Russ is predeceased by three of his siblings as well as his eldest son, Wendell Powell (survived wife, Michele Powell). He is survived by his wife, Johann; his two children, Randy Powell (wife, Sheri) and Belinda Shontere (Steve Welch); four grandchildren, Valerie Dupont (husband, Terry), Jason Powell (wife, Kylie), Alexis Shontere, and Elisabeth Powell; and two great grandchildren, Shawn and Jacob Dupont. He is also survived by his sister, Juanita Alphin (late husband, Bob), and his youngest brother, Ernest Powell, Sr. (wife, Teresa).
Russ will be remembered as a man who built his life around family and the Lord. His family and friends will miss his big hugs, boisterous laugh, and his sincere prayers. Fond memories of him working in his garage, cutting wood for his beloved wood stove, and eating Wilbur buds will remain in his family’s hearts for years to come.
The family is asking that in lieu of flowers, donations please be made to The American Cancer Society or Grace Bible Church, 9920 Lanham Severn Road, Lanham, MD 20706. A private burial will be held at a later date.
