Sadie M. Gallagher
8 December 1928- 17 July 2019
Sadie was born in Wallaceton, PA on 8 December 1928 - the youngest of 16 children to Howard and Grace Dunlap.
Upon graduating from Philipsburg High School’s Class of 1947, Sadie was recruited by the federal government. She moved to Washington DC and was living in a government dorm in VA while working as a fingerprint analyst for the FBI. It was here that she met her future U.S. Army soldier husband, Charlie Gallagher, who was stationed at Fort Myer VA. After a whirlwind romance, Charlie and Sadie were married at St. Patrick’s in Washington D.C. on 6 August 1949. Sadie and Charlie lived briefly in Chicago IL and Richmond VA before settling in New Carrollton MD in 1959. Sadie raised her kids in New Carrollton. Sadie and Charlie were surprisingly blessed with their third child, Stacey, while in the midst of raising Karen and Chuck Jr. who were already teenagers. Sadie spent countless hours as a volunteer in the library of St. Matthias School where her children attended classes.
Sadie suffered the loss of her beloved Charlie in 1983. Although saddened, Sadie still continued to find joy in her church, volunteering, and family.
Sadie kept her spunk as the years went by. Through her 60s and 70s, she stayed active as a member of weekly bowling leagues with several of her friends. She also enrolled in water aerobics classes. Sadie's greatest joy was babysitting her granddaughters as they grew up, and she especially enjoyed teaching them how to play card games like Old Maid and War.
As she was to all of her loved ones, Sadie was devoted to her four-legged friends, her dogs Gator and Bingo. With them she would often enjoy hotdogs out on her back deck. She spent much of her down time doing some of her favorite activities—reading books, sewing uniforms and clothes for her family members, crocheting afghans, and watching her all-time favorite television shows, The Andy Griffith Show, Perry Mason, and Jeopardy. All who knew Sadie, or “Granny” as her family knew her, know that she was one of the most selfless and kindest people with a heart of gold. Her witty, vibrant, and fun self will surely be missed, but Sadie will live on in the hearts of those closest to her.
Sadie was predeceased by her parents, Howard and Grace Dunlap, 15 siblings, her husband of 33 years, Charles G. Gallagher, and an infant daughter, Ann Marie. Sadie is survived by her loving daughter, Stacey Gallagher Cleveland, her loving son-in-law Michael Cleveland and loving granddaughters Kelly and Diana Cleveland. Sadie is also survived by a son, Charles Jr., daughter Karen Gallagher, granddaughter Camille Gullotta, and many nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
The family would like to express their gratitude to Ms. Marie Moss and staff of In Community Senior Care in Bowie, for the outstanding care and love that Sadie received in her final years.
