She was born in Belhaven, NC to the late James Henry Burrus and Margaret Mann Burrus on August 5, 1953. Sandra is survived by her three sons, Barrington B. (Arielle) Cooper, Charles A. (Siera) Cooper, and Adam M. (Chinaza) Cooper.
Sandra grew up in Norfolk, VA and later moved with her family to Chesapeake, VA, as a ninth grader. She was a 1971 graduate of Crestwood High School and attended Old Dominion University (ODU) where she earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration in 1975. During her time at ODU, she was a proud charter member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc., the first historically black sorority or fraternity established on the campus.
Following graduation from college, Sandra began her professional career in Washington, DC, working at the American Bankers Association. Several years later, she continued her career at Howard University working as Administrative Assistant to the Dean of Housing. Following a successful career, she retired from Howard University in 2007.
In retirement, she enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, cooking, eating, exercising and tending her many plants and flowers. She was a proud member of the World Mission Society Church of God and enjoyed spending time at Church with all her heavenly brothers and sisters. She believed in God Elohim and Their promise of eternal life.
A devoted and loving grandmother, Sandra is also survived by five grandchildren; Blake Elyce Cooper, Ari Cooper, Aminah Cooper, Cydnee Cooper and Charlee Cooper. In addition, she is survived by two sisters; Althea (Raymond) Albritton and Clementine (Dwight) Brown; one uncle, Herbert Barrow; one aunt, Rosabell Morrison; one niece, Andrea Sheppard; three nephews, James Sheppard, Steven Albritton, and Aaron Albritton; four great nieces, three great nephews, and a host of cousins, all of whom she loved dearly.
Sandy will be greatly missed, our days will never be the same without her, but we are comforted by knowing she is at eternal peace and rest.
