Sandra Kay Thompson-Collins departed this life on Wednesday, June 9, 2021 at Anne Arundel Medical Center. Sandy, as she was called by many, was born on June 14, 1946, in Lexington, Virginia. She was the fourth of seven children born to the late Vaden H. Thompson, Sr. and Cornelia Massie Thompson.
Sandy enjoyed her years at Randolph Street United Methodist Church. She was a member of the youth choir, the MYF group, served as a reader of the morning announcements and had the opportunity to be a Mother’s Day speaker. Sandy attended Lylburn Downing School and had fond memories of playing in the marching band. After high school graduation, she moved to Washington, D.C., and started working at the U.S. Post Office, then eventually was employed by DC Water Authority (formerly called DC Water and Sewer Authority) for 46 years. During her tenure at DC Water, Sandy was a Budget Analyst for many years; however, due to her exemplary work ethic and great attention to detail she was promoted to manager of the Accounts Payable Department. After retiring in 2013, Sandy joined the New Members Committee at Cameron Grove Resort Center, where she resided. She was infamously known for her elaborate poster boards when planning activities/events. She loved to Line Dance, Zumba, and hang with her Road Dog Divas. Sandy was also an active member of the “Sassy but Classy” bowling club, where she became effectionally known as “Foxy Gigi”.
Sandy loved her two daughters, and bonus grandson, but her heart belonged to the four granddaughters who affectionately called her “Gigi”.
Sandy was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Angeline T. Gower. She leaves the following to cherish her memory: two daughters, Serieta Collins-Matthews and Shervonne Dominique Huling (Donald); one brother, Vaden H. Thompson, Jr. (Irene); four sisters, Elizabeth Lee Merchant (Joseph), Linda A. Vincent, Gwendolyn T. Poole, and Rose T. James (Benjamin); four granddaughters: Trinity Matthews, Skye Matthews, Kayla Matthews, London Huling, one grandson, Daniel Huling, one godson, Isaiah Reeves and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.
