Santa Vega Torres left her family and friends on December 29th 2020 at the age of 62 at her home in Odenton, MD. Santa was born in Guayama, Puerto Rico and raised in the Bronx, NY. She was one of eight children raised by her parents, Eneida and Efigenio (Fijo) Vega. She was masterful in her studies, skipped the eighth grade, and graduated from John F. Kennedy High School at the age of 17. She met her future husband, Jose (Joe) Torres, at Nathan’s restaurant in 1975 in Manhattan where she worked as a cashier and Joe worked as a cook. Santa married Joe on June 4th 1977. Upon Joe’s commission as an officer in the U.S. Army, Santa spent the next 21.5 years as a military spouse moving around the world and raising her two sons. Joseph (Lil’ Joe) was born in 1980 and Eric was born in 1982. Santa returned to college and graduated summa cum laude with a B.A. in Elementary Education from Christopher Newport University in Newport News and worked in elementary school teaching World Languages and 2nd grade. Santa and Joe retired again from teaching in 2018 and moved to Odenton, MD to be closer to their grandchildren. Santa enjoyed her retirement life in an active adult community playing card games, attending family events, and engaging in her lifelong passion for crafts, quilting, and various art projects. Santa was one of the most selfless persons you could ever meet. She was witty, kind, and always had a positive outlook in life, even during her courageous fight with breast cancer. She always put her family first until the day of her death. Santa is survived by her husband of 43 years, Joe; and by her two sons, Joseph & Eric, daughter-in-law Jacqueline, and three grandchildren: Camden, Corinne, and Julianna. She is also survived by her sisters Ruth Santory, Migdalia Pina, Carmen Borek, Mildred Vega, Angelique Aldridge and brother Harry Vega. There will be a viewing on Saturday, January 2nd 2021 from 10am-12pm at Beall Funeral Home at 6512 NW Crain Highway, Bowie, MD 20715. In lieu of flowers, Santa’s family prefers a donation in Santa’s name to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.
