Sergei began his life in village Maklakovo, Pronsky District, Ryazan Region, Russia on December 24, 1988, as Sergei Alexandrovich Lapshin; born to Alexander Lapshin and Elena Ostroukhova. Seven years later, his sister Anna, for whom he has always had a strong love and fondness, was born. They were adopted together in August 2005 by Carl and Geraldine Bower. Sergei became a U.S. Citizen on August 18, 2005.
Sergei graduated from Eleanor Roosevelt High School in 2009. He was a member of the JV soccer team and member of the Slavic Honor Society. He graduated with honors from Anne Arundel Community College in 2011 with an Associate of Applied Science degree and received a Bachelor of Science degree, with honors from the University of Baltimore in 2014. Both college programs were in specialty fields of computer science. At home, Sergei has always been our “Computer Guru.”
Sergei has always been a hard and loyal worker. He worked as a life guard for the Southern Management Corporation (SMC) Aquatics Division, throughout his college years. He continued with SMC full time in additional aquatic capacities after college. He left SMC for a few years to work for the District Photo company in Beltsville, which provided him opportunity to contribute his combined skills in photography and various areas of computer graphics. In 2017 he returned to SMC full-time as Service Technician, and also supervised life guards and pre-seasonal workers.
Sergei had many pastimes and special interests. He has spent countless hours after college in an entrepreneurial business of computer graphics, with a focus on video shoots of local car and motorcycle enthusiast groups. He has done lots of videography for special groups including DMV Bike Life, a Beltway Bike Club, and numerous meets for bike, car, and 4-wheeler events. He spent many hours riding motorcycles and 4-wheelers in off-road riding events. Sergei was an exceptional ice skater and skier and skied in Russia, France, and on the East and West Coasts in the U.S. He also loved playing in pickup basketball and soccer games.
Those who mourn and will miss him forever include his sister, Anna Bower; parents, Carl and Geraldine Bower; his daughter, Alexandria Torres; his brother and sister-in-law, Carl and Terry Bower, and his niece Sabina; his sister, Kelly Bower and his nephews Alex and Jack Bower; plus a large host of uncles, aunts, and cousins in Oregon who love him dearly and welcomed Sergei and Anna with wide open arms when they arrived from Russia. He was dearly loved by his fiancé, Karen Maldonado, and a host of friends from many arenas of his life activities.
We believe Sergei knew the Lord and that we will join him in Heaven someday. We will love him forever. He is truly missed.
