We are saddened to share that Stephanie “Michael” Mohundro of Bowie, Maryland, died at the age of 45 on November 16, 2022. Mike is survived by her two children Aidan and Zane Gough; mother Janet, father David, sister Alicia, and brother Jon-David. Mike was born on October 21, 1977 in New Orleans, Louisiana and grew up in Franklin, Texas. She attended Franklin High School and graduated in 1995 where she mastered many musical specialties, won several livestock competitions and was honored as Who’s Who Among American High School Students several years in a row. Upon receipt of appointment from Congressman John Bryan, she went on to attend the United States Merchant Marine Academy as a Midshipman, USNR, where she earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Marine Engineering Shipyard Management, and received a 3rd Assistant Engineer’s Unlimited Merchant Marine license. After graduating from the Merchant Marine Academy, Mike continued her education, earning dual Master of Science degrees in Business Management and Engineering and Project Management. Shortly following, she entered federal service with the Department of the Navy as a Project Engineer for Naval Sea Systems Command. She spent 15 years specializing in submarine escape, survivability and rescue, as well as overseeing the Science and Technology/Research and Development programs for undersea special mission systems. Mike was very well respected, and her advice and experience were sought after by those in Team Submarine, Naval Sea Systems Command and the international submarine rescue community. Her expertise and professional dedication has had, and will continue to have well into the future, a profound impact on our nation’s and international submarine personnel.
A self-proclaimed “artsy-fartsy engineer,” Mike had a love and talent for creatively working with her hands, whether it be painting, house remodeling projects, designing and building one-of-a-kind epoxy resin tabletops or by fractal wood burning. She loved being a mother to her two sons Aidan and Zane. She made it a point to attend every activity they had and cherished every moment she spent with them.
A Memorial Gathering will be held at the Beall Funeral Home 6512 Crain Hwy, Bowie, MD 20715 on Friday, December 9th from 5:00-7:00pm.
