Sylvester R. Thompson, Jr departed peacefully to be with our Lord on Sunday, November 15, 2020.  He was affectionately called “Tommy” and “Sly” by his family and friends.  We were very blessed with his 90 years of life.  Sylvester was very active and thoroughly enjoyed life to the fullest.  He was a sports enthusiast and engaged in sporting activities such as swimming, biking, and golfing.  He enjoyed working with electronics and in his earlier years was a HAM Radio Operator and a Television Repair Specialist.  He was also an avid reader.

Sylvester was born on December 8, 1929 to parents Sylvester R. Thompson, Sr, and Elvin (Matthews) Thompson in Jamestown, NY.  He attended Grammar and High Schools (HS) at this location.  After graduating from HS, he attended Hampton University in Virginia and enrolled into the Army’s ROTC Program.  Sylvester left the University after a year and a half and enlisted in the Air Force.  After his honorable discharge from the military, he moved to New York City and began his civilian employment.  He worked in several agencies but the occupation that he most enjoyed was his longtime career employment with American Airlines (AA) where he labored as an Aircraft Mechanic for 31 years until his retirement in December 1992.  He relocated to the Tampa Bay region in Florida to enjoy his retirement.

Sylvester was married to Corinne (Berrian) Thompson, this union produced a son (Stephen) and a daughter (Diane).  He was also married to Eldora (Brazley) Thompson.  Both unions ended with the spouse’s death.

He was an Impressionist art lover.  After retirement, Sylvester engaged in several activities to include creating stained glass pictures (he published a book on his works of art).  He traveled to many different countries in Europe, Africa, and Asia with his touring companions.  Sylvester also obtained an Associate’s Degree in Liberal Arts from Hillsborough Community College.  Due to health reasons, he moved to Maryland to be close to his immediate family and other close relatives.  Sylvester enjoyed conversing with people and was greatly beloved and respected by those he met.  He leaves behind a host of family members and friends to cherish his memories; his son, Stephen Thompson (Alice), daughter, Diane Thompson, grandson, Stephen Ashanti Thompson, a sister, Cheryl Henderson, niece, Johnette Henderson, nephew, Christopher Henderson, cousins, devoted friends, colleagues and all others whose lives he touched.

Sylvester was an awesome father, grandfather, brother, uncle, cousin, and friend and will be greatly missed.  We love you Dad, rest in peace and we look forward to seeing you again in eternity in the presence of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
