Alice (Buddie) Frances Bannigan Westborg
On December 22, 2022, Alice Frances Bannigan Westborg of Bowie, Maryland died at the age of 97. Alice was a beloved daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, and friend to many. She was known for her welcoming smile, friendly wit and humorous sayings.
Alice was born in Washington DC, the eldest of four daughters born to William and Alice Newheiser. She was nicknamed Buttercup after a comic strip character so she was known to many as Bud or Buddie. As a child she enjoyed reading, playing basketball, shooting archery and swimming. As a military wife, she traveled and moved quite a bit. She lived many places throughout her lifeincluding two overseas tours in Germany and Okinawa, Japan. Once her husband retired from the military they settled in Bowie Maryland and resided there for 52 years. After her 11 children were all in school, she returned to workmoving up quickly in the Department of the Army. She retired from the government after 20 years of federal service.
In retirement, Buddie loved spending time with her family including her many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She loved the beach and sitting in the sunshine! She would read the newspaper daily and enjoyed doing the crossword puzzle and playing solitaire on the computer.
Alice’s husband of 32 years, William E. Bannigan, her second husband of 6 years, John F. Westborg, and her son, George E. Bannigan, all preceded her in death. Surviving her are her children, Margaret A. (Dan) Dellinger, Jane L. (Phillip) Boger, Rose M. Bannigan, William F. (Valerie) Bannigan, Alice F. (Hugh) Breslin, Mary P. (Dan) Renwick, Elizabeth K. Hughes, Therese I. (Bill) Holtzman, Michael A. (Anne) Bannigan and Kathleen M. Carroll. Daughter of the late William F. and Alice A. Newheiser. Sister of Ethel (Sissy) Eagan, Mary Brooks, and Margaret Klotz. Also surviving her are her 24 grandchildren and 24 great grandchildren.
Friends may call Beall Funeral Home, 6512 NW Crain Highway (Route 3), Bowie, MD 20715 on Tuesday, January 3, 2023, from 2-4pm and 6-8 pm, a funeral service will begin at 7pm Tuesday evening. A private interment will be held Tuesday, January 10, 2023, at Cheltenham Veterans Cemetery.
