Therese "Terry" H. Schuette
July 24, 1931 — July 28, 2018
Terry passed away peacefully on July 28, 2018, surrounded by her family whom she so loved and who loved her in return. She is survived by Paul, her husband of 63 years; her children, Scott, Allison (Tim), Jennifer (Carol), and Maggie; her grandchildren, Casey, Morgan, Bailey, Jack, Charlie and Harper; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Terry was born July 24, 1931 in Gary, Indiana. She was the baby, the youngest of six, all of whom preceded her in death. One of her first adventures was attending boarding high school – two states away in Wisconsin. She excelled academically from the beginning. After college she returned to Gary and began working as a reporter at the Gary Post-Tribune, where she met her future husband, a reporter as well. They shared a love and reverence for good writing, which they passed down to their children. Books lined the walls of every home they occupied. Shortly after their first child was born, the young trio moved to Washington D.C., then to the newly-minted suburb of Bowie, MD, where they would live for the next 50 years. Terry took a break from her career to devote herself full time to her family when the kids were young. She would return with a vengeance, slaking her interest in politics with jobs working for U.S. Representative Gladys Spellman and State Senator Leo E. Green, among others. She later became a highly successful speechwriter, writing for the Assistant Secretary of Agriculture and the President of the United Food and Commercial Workers Union, and was occasionally drafted to lend her talents to national political campaigns. She finished her career as a beloved columnist for the Bowie Blade-News, entertaining local readers with sharply observed political analysis, as well as more prosaic tales of the foibles of friends and family. Most important of all, she was a mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and cousin. She was deeply loved and will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
