Vera Jean Winston, 78, beloved mother and grandmother peacefully went to be with the Lord and joined her husband, Samuel Winston, on Wednesday, July 1, 2020. She flew into God's arms while at home and surrounded by her two children, Kendall Winston and Nikita De Burgo along with her son-in-law Jean De Burgo and caregivers. She leaves behind her daughter-in-law Caprece Winston and 4 grandchildren, Paris Winston, Desmond De Burgo, Justin De Burgo, and Marcellus De Burgo in Maryland. Vera was preceded in death by her sister Joyce Canada-Whalum, parents Toy and Vera Milsap, and nephew Herbert Miller.
Having been born and raised in Chicago, IL, Vera had the wonderful pleasure of meeting her "Heart" Samuel Winston. Their love kept them together for 39 years until his worldly departure took him away in 2003. As an Air Force military family, Vera had an opportunity to live in Japan and Italy and visit several other countries such as Germany. Vera loved her family and always ensured they took family vacations every year whether to a beach in Italy, white water rafting in Harpers Ferry, VA, or grass skiing in the Blue Ridge mountains of VA. Vera made a mean partner with Sam as they played Bit Wiz cards regularly with friends. As the music played on their reel to reel, Vera enjoyed many spins in the living room dancing with Sam. Vera was known for always making an entrance to a party or cabaret. While raising her children in Maryland, she worked as a Diplomatic Test Examiner.
In her golden years of retirement, Vera served as an Election Judge helping voters for many years in her community as she took her civic duty seriously. Vera enjoyed talking and sharing her wisdom with friends and family. She stayed well informed with local news and politics. Vera had a wealth of knowledge. If she wasn't talking, Vera was watching her many favorite shows. She also enjoyed keeping up with the many activities of her grandkids and felt it very important to help support their college education. As everyone knew, Vera was the "Queen Bee". If she was your friend, she had your back. Now that she has taken her final breath, she has passed the baton to her daughter who is now allowed to be "Queen Bee".
