Vincent L. Eng

August 5, 1933 — September 21, 2020

Vincent Eng passed away at Charlestown Retirement Community in Catonsville, Maryland on September 21^st, 2020 from cancer. He joins his beloved wife, Gloria, who passed away in January of this year. He was born in Canton province in China and attended a Christian boarding school. With the onset of war between China and Japan, his family moved to Hong Kong where Vincent continued his studies and later attended La Salle College in Hong Kong. He graduated with honors and was employed as an actuary at a hospital administered by the British government. Vincent and Gloria married in 1953 and had three children.

In 1966, Vincent and his family emigrated to New York City where his parents resided for many years. Within 48 hours of arrival, Vincent, through determination, impeccable knowledge and experience, made such an impression that he was hired at the end of the interview at an insurance company in Manhattan. He remembers, with humor, the challenges of navigating the NYC subway system in order to return home. It was his proudest moment during his first week in America. His father was surprised and proud of Vincent’s accomplishment. Even with his new job, he helped for many years at his father’s restaurant in the evenings and weekends.

He was well respected in the actuary profession in New York City and finally retired at 75, moved with his wife to New Jersey and then to Maryland in 2018, near his daughter. Vincent believed in working hard with meticulousness and pride in his work. He applied his work ethic in raising his family and taking care of his aged parents. He sent all his children to college and all gained employment in the tech industry after graduation. Vincent was blessed with five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. They made him smile and laugh throughout his life, particularly during his last years. His joys and concerns always centered on his family.
