Walter Nathaniel Savory

After a brave struggle with failing health, Walter Nathaniel Savory aka Grandad of Bowie, MD passed away on March 10, 2020 at the Prince George’s County Hospital. He was 88 years old.

The third in a family of six children, Walter was born to Gladstone and Emily Savory on November 7, 1931 in Liliendaal, Guyana, South America. He received his formal education at the Kitty Methodist and the Graham’s Hall Moravian Schools in Georgetown, Guyana. It was there that the early sparks of his tenacity could be seen as he participated enthusiastically in athletic meets sponsored by his schools. His life is distinguished by two attributes: hard work and a strong love for family. Maybe his protective instinct kicked in when he lost his mom at the age of 8, but Walter undoubtedly displayed a passion for family from his youth as he joined the world of work and helped his dad to support his siblings. He was a diligent and loyal employee who worked for an approximate total of sixty years as a special constable with the Guyana Police Force, a driver/salesman with the Dallas V. Kidman Company, and a supervisor with the Guyana National Shipping Corporation.

Walter met Wilma, the love of his life, around 1957 and two years later, they married on January 3, 1959; their union bore six children.

In 2003, Walter migrated from his homeland to the United States of America in order to be with those of his children who were residing here at the time. Now a retiree from the workforce, he was no longer a breadwinner; but he became the ‘bread maker’, diligently baking bread each week for the households of his children who lived close enough. This role he fulfilled cheerfully until his failing health forced him to stop. Finally, when he could fight no more, he went to sleep the way he enjoyed life best – surrounded by his family.

Walter Nathaniel Savory is survived by his wife: Wilma Waldena Savory nee Bacchus; six children: Wendy (Neville) Alert, Derick (Bernice) Savory, Denise (Hector) Telford, Andrew (Barbara) Savory, Symone (Arnold) Cozier, and Nigel (Ronda) Savory; nineteen grandchildren: Keon, Mikhail (Stacy), Sulare (Winston), Marissa, Kwesi, Stefan, Shanell, Medita, Malissa, Shaquille, Dayne, Nishell, Renita, Vanita, Shamika, Tashell, Niesha, Terrence, Ethan; five great grandchildren: Jenya, Jadan, Isabelle, Gabrielle, and Zoey; siblings: Robert (Lloyd) Savory and Carlton Savory, Yvonne Savory, Olive (June) Cumberbatch, and George Savory; and numerous nieces and nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. His memory will live on in each heart.

He has been predeceased by his parents and two siblings: Elsa Liverpool, nee Savory and Orin Savory.
