William (Bill) Henry Carter, Jr. was born on February 10, 1933 in Williamston, NC to William Henry Carter, Sr. and Inez Myrtle Mountain (Carter). Bill Carter lost his parents at a young age and was raised by his maternal grandparents, John H. Mountain, Sr. and Georgie Weaver (Mountain) along with countless relatives who affectionately called him “Billy”
Bill enlisted in the US Army in 1952 and was honorably discharged as a Sergeant in 1955. During his active duty he served in the Korean War. He was awarded with a service medal for Combat Infantry Badge, National Defense Service Medal, Korean Service Medal, Commendation Ribbon w/Metal Pendant and a Good Conduct Medal. He continued his service with the Army Reserve until December 1963. After serving in the Army, Bill took courses at Kansas State, North Carolina A&T, and Columbia University with a concentration in Mathematics.
Bill worked at Jonathan Temple & Company, Inc., in Hackensack, NJ as an Industrial Chemist for over 20 years. He retired from his career as a Chemist and later focused on his passion of coin and stamp collecting. He would later open his own coin, stamp, and jewelry shop. As a boy, Bill became a master of carpentry by working with his grandfather. He was always there to help his children, extended relatives, and friends with household projects.
Bill was a man who cherished both his immediate and extended family. He was very proud of his children’s and grandchildren’s accomplishments and endeavors, always supporting them unconditionally.
Bill was never one to miss a party and always had a good time…sometimes too good! He enjoyed playing chess with his grandchildren, loved a good gadget and always told the worst jokes…that everyone laughed at anyway.
