On Monday, April 20, 2020, Gerald Andrew Scheidhauer, Sr., formerly of Bowie and Crofton, MD, passed away peacefully of natural causes surrounded by family at Caritas House Assisted Living in Baltimore. Loving brother, father, and grandfather “Pop”, Jerry was born on November 6, 1939, in Philadelphia to Roy and Beatrice Scheidhauer. He was the fourth of five children. His parents named him after Philadelphia Bishop Gerald O’Hara. Jerry was a member of the first graduating class of Monsignor Bonner Catholic High School. He also attended St. Joseph’s College. He served in the U.S. Army at Fort Sill, Oklahoma.

After marrying Mercedes Dowd in Philadelphia, they first settled in Greenbelt, MD, and moved to Bowie in 1972 where they raised a close-knit family of four sons: Gerry, Greg, Erik, and Jeff, and one daughter, Nancy. Jerry served on the Bowie Bicentennial Committee, coached Bowie youth sports, and was active in local politics as a volunteer. He was a long-time member of Whitehall Pool and Tennis Club. Jerry also loved Annapolis and the U.S. Naval Academy. He was a regular attendee at Naval Academy football games and sponsored multiple plebes over the years.

A devout Catholic, he raised his family as parishioners at St. Pius X in Bowie and served as an usher for years. Jerry was active in the Knights of Columbus for his entire adult life, more than 50 years, earning his 4th degree and holding many leadership positions. Because of his dedication, he was even voted “Knight of the Year.”

Jerry worked in pharmaceutical sales for Bristol Myers and Squibb for decades and achieved sales records as a manager of the mid-Atlantic region. He was named Salesman of the Year multiple times. An extrovert by nature, he excelled at establishing networks, getting to know people, and traveling his region visiting professional contacts.

He is best remembered as a fun-loving brother, uncle, father, and grandfather who loved family get-togethers of any kind. He was the biggest supporter of the bi-annual Scheidhauer family reunions. He is survived by his children: Gerry (Sharon) of Celebration, FL; Nancy (Randy) Myers of Westminster, MD; Greg (Andrea) of Crofton, MD; Erik (Jill) of Urbana, MD; and Jeff (Terry) of Abingdon, MD. His 17 grandchildren: Nick, Caroline, Max, Alexis, Christine, Brooke, Brennan, Ava, Katie, Christopher, Jack, Ryan, Kevin, Jackson, Amy, Maggie, and Nicholas miss him dearly. Jerry is also survived by three siblings: Carole Townsend, Bill (Aileen) Scheidhauer, and Ginny McKee as well as dozens of loving nieces and nephews.

He is pre-deceased by his parents, sister Joan McCarey, and former wife Mercedes “Marcy” Scheidhauer.

All services are private. The family is planning a memorial celebration at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Catholic Charities of Baltimore.
