John William Smith of Brandywine passed away on May 11, 2022 at his home. He was born in Washington, DC.
He is survived by his wife of nineteen years, Marlene Smith; his daughters Jean Windsor; Betty Nelson; Toni Sypolt; Billie Blumenstein; grandchildren; great-grandchildren; brother, Edward Lloyd Smith; sisters, Alice Joyce Paschal; Elizabeth Jean Benning; Edna Eleanor Walker; nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William Edward and Elizabeth Catherine Smith and sister, Dorothy Ann Forrest.
John had a lifetime career in the electrical industry trade and had fifteen Master Electrician licenses. He taught for several years at Prince Georges Community College on the electrical codes and prepped students for testing in order to obtain their electrical licenses. He was an incredible teacher. He often had past students stop him and say, “Mr. Smith, because of you, I not only got my license, but I am successful at my trade.” He was a mentor, was admired and highly respected by fellow persons in his trade. He knew the codes like the back of his hand. He owned his own business, B Electrical Service for many years before joining Prince George’s County Government’s electrical inspection department of which he retired on June 1, 2019.
John was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, boating and just “hanging out” on his brother, Edward’s farm. He was a lifetime member of the St. Charles Sportsman Club and endowment member of the National Rifle Association. He loved to travel and he and Marlene were very fortunate to have enjoyed many exciting trips all over the world.
